J&D Bicycles closed; happy retirement!

We received notice from Joyce and Dennis Ferguson that they have closed their J&D Bicycles shop in Troy, Ohio, after 35-plus years in the business. The bike shop property was sold as of September 30.

“…our future sees us riding our own bikes much more and spending time with family.” They wrote, “We will now be available for friends and family without retail hours holding us back!” The couple donated much of their inventory to Bicycles for All, Dayton.

Congratulations on your retirement, Joyce and Dennis, and for your service to Ohio cycling over all those years. Thanks, too, for your support of the Ohio Bicycle Federation and the Ohio Bicycle Events Calendar. Enjoy your well-earned time off!

Since 1986 I have served as editor of the Ohio Bicycle Events Calendar. As then-chair of the Ohio Bicycle Federation (OBF), I took on the position immediately following the untimely death of David Fortier. The first edition of the Calendar was issued in 1984 via the offices of the Miami Valley Regional Bicycle Council (MVRBC) and consisted of a single printed 8 1/2 X 11 double-sided, sheet listing the year's events. While the MVRBC provided essential assistance in launching the Calendar, it was Fortier who envisioned a glossy publication distributed statewide. The calendar, he also believed, would assist event promoters in avoiding scheduling conflicts, and attracting riders. The Calendar has changed format over the years and is increasingly accessed via the World Wide Web but remains true to its original mission. -- James Guilford
