By the time you read this, the 2019 edition of the annual Ohio Bicycle Events Calendar (OBEC) will be at the print shop ready to hit the presses. More than 160 cycling events, old and new, will appear in this year’s Calendar along with news of an exciting new safety program being offered by the Ohio Bicycle Federation, our publisher.
As usual, you’ll be able to find printed copies of the OBEC at many of Ohio’s finest bicycle shops, through local bicycle clubs, upon request direct from us, or electronically via this website. Regarding the latter: we’ll “go live” with this year’s listings at the end of February or when the Calendar appears in print, whichever comes first.
And so we herald the coming cycling season for Ohioans; let’s hope for great weather. Off we go!

Since 1986 I have served as editor of the Ohio Bicycle Events Calendar. As then-chair of the Ohio Bicycle Federation (OBF), I took on the position immediately following the untimely death of David Fortier. The first edition of the Calendar was issued in 1984 via the offices of the Miami Valley Regional Bicycle Council (MVRBC) and consisted of a single printed 8 1/2 X 11 double-sided, sheet listing the year's events. While the MVRBC provided essential assistance in launching the Calendar, it was Fortier who envisioned a glossy publication distributed statewide. The calendar, he also believed, would assist event promoters in avoiding scheduling conflicts, and attracting riders. The Calendar has changed format over the years and is increasingly accessed via the World Wide Web but remains true to its original mission. -- James Guilford
