The 2023 edition of the Ohio Bicycle Events Calendar — our 40th annual issue — has been “put to bed”. That is, the digital file that will be used for printing the booklets has been uploaded to the art department of the printing company. At the printer’s, a number of steps remain in the prepress process but it’s a much more direct line than it used to be from the editor’s desk to the printed page. Once the page proofs are approved (all but a simple formality anymore) printing is given the go-ahead and our project added to the plant’s work queue.
The short story here is that the 2023 Calendar will be in print soon and begin shipping and distribution. “Soon” is yet to be defined, however.
Since 1986 I have served as editor of the Ohio Bicycle Events Calendar. As then-chair of the Ohio Bicycle Federation (OBF), I took on the position immediately following the untimely death of David Fortier. The first edition of the Calendar was issued in 1984 via the offices of the Miami Valley Regional Bicycle Council (MVRBC) and consisted of a single printed 8 1/2 X 11 double-sided, sheet listing the year's events. While the MVRBC provided essential assistance in launching the Calendar, it was Fortier who envisioned a glossy publication distributed statewide. The calendar, he also believed, would assist event promoters in avoiding scheduling conflicts, and attracting riders. The Calendar has changed format over the years and is increasingly accessed via the World Wide Web but remains true to its original mission. -- James Guilford
